High - Resolution Studies of the Solar Polar
نویسنده
چکیده
We present high-resolution studies of the solar polar magnetic elds near sunspot maximum in 1989 and towards sunspot minimum in 1995. We show that, in 1989, the polar latitudes were covered by several unipolar regions of both polarities. In 1995, however, after the polar eld reversal was complete, each pole exhibited only one dominant polarity region. Each unipolar region contains magnetic knots of both polarities but the number count of the knots of the dominant polarity exceeds that of the opposite polarity by a ratio of order 4:1, and it is rare to nd opposite polarity pairs, i.e. magnetic bipoles. These knots have lifetimes greater than 7 hours but less than 24 hours. We interpret the longitudinal displacement of the knots over a 7 hour period as a measure of the local rotation rate. This rotation rate is found to be generally consistent with Snodgrass' (1983) magnetic rotation law. In an attempt to obtain some insight into the operation of the solar dynamo, sketches of postulated subsurface eld conngurations corresponding to the observed surface elds at these two epochs of the solar cycle are presented.

High-Resolution Topography and Albedo of the South Polar Layered Deposits on Mars
Using a new photoclinometric technique with high-resolution Mariner 9 images, maximum slopes of 10ø-20 ø are found to occur on an exposure of layered deposits within the south polar residual cap of Mars. Stereophotogrammetry is used to constrain the photoclinometric solutions, which resolve layer thicknesses of 100-300 m. Albedo variations are correlated with slope, indicating that frost is pre...
متن کاملNovel pole-sitter mission concepts for continuous polar remote sensing
The pole-sitter concept is a solution to the poor temporal resolution of polar observations from highly inclined, low Earth orbits and the poor high latitude coverage from geostationary orbit. It considers a spacecraft that is continuously above either the North or South Pole and, as such, can provide real-time, continuous and hemispheric coverage of the polar regions. Despite the significant d...
متن کاملDistribution and Validation of Cloud Cover Derived from AVHRR Data Over the Arctic Ocean During the SHEBA Year
Determination of cloud radiation interactions over large areas of the Arctic is possible only with the use of data from polar orbiting satellites. Cloud detection using satellite data is difficult in the Arctic due to the minimal contrast between clouds and the underlying snow surface in visible and infrared wavelengths. Polar clouds are frequently warmer or at the same brightness temperature a...
متن کاملUlysses observations of pressure - balance structures in the polar solar wind
Throughout its high-latitude excursion Ulysses has observed several types of solar wind structures. In addition to structures such as Alfven waves, compressional features, and microstreams, the solar wind also contains low contrast pressure-balance structures (PBSs). The PBSs are marked by an anti-correlation of the plasma and field pressures; their signatures are often hidden by the comparativ...
متن کاملMagnetic Landscape of Sun’s Polar Region
We present the magnetic landscape of the polar region of the Sun that is unprecedented in terms of high spatial resolution, large field of view, and polarimetric precision. These observations were carried out with the Solar Optical Telescope aboard Hinode. Using a Milne-Eddington inversion, we found many vertically-oriented magnetic flux tubes with field strength as strong as 1 kG that are scat...
